Top 5 Nerdy Looks to Love, All February

Having braved most of the Mumbai “winter” – eye-roll complete- it’s finally time for a fun change to optimistic prints, reassuring colours and shapes that define comfort- yep, it’s time for a spanking new look, this Spring.

With  political & climatic uncertainty, fashion, like our emotions, is all about reaching out to comfort. What’s important though, is adding your own special signature twist! And who doesn’t like a good old-fashioned twist in any story? I enjoy the feel of the familiar and if it’s a piece of clothing that takes me back to an easier time- heck, sign me up!

So, new season means new look, and this is where it all starts getting fun!  Here’s my take on the most fun looks off the Catwalks, that can be easily adopted, turning your winter wardrobe from dull to dramatic!

Being a geek has never been more stylish than it is this season. Botanical & very Biology Class inspired, this bookworm friendly look is for the geek in all of us. There’s something irresistibly attractive about a pretty Know-it-All; and the proof of this popular nerdy-chic trend is that it has taken the runway & high street fashion brands by storm!

Spotted across fashion capitals there’s a strong 70’s vibe that’s all about the clever mixing of soft feminine pieces with masculine utilitarian outers. Designs at Orla Kiely & Alice+Olivia are inspired by borrowed-from-granny-chic. While, at Sea & Maryam Nassir Zadeh, lovely vintage blouses & reworked denim wear are delightfully geeky!

Significant at Alice + Olivia, the NY ready to wear collection is all about getting your pretty geek on! What’s not to love about soft feminine blouses in botanical prints layered beneath soft lightweight jackets?

I love the softly structured military dresses, along with a good dose of hippy happiness. The palette is very botanical and definitely up Nerd Street.

The trick in bookish dressing is to throw off the whole ultra in-your-face sexy look any quietly layer up on softer pieces with more functional & heavy duty outers. While softer layers add a special touch of femininity, the everyday outer layers add practicality & comfort .

When it comes to the colour palette, I’m a huge fan of the predominant shade of Kale green- Pantones big bet on colour of the season, especially when it pops up unexpectedly in severe shirt-dresses & sunglasses !

There’s a strong 70’s vibe with deep botanical inspired colours like Primrose Yellow and Kale Green, as key favorite.

Delicate fern prints clash with slogan graphic t-shirts & fashionably scruffy textural solids.

Identifying and acquiring a few key geeky vintage pieces is tricky – but an exercise that’s very fun. As I’ve always been a huge fan of mixing up everyday looks with a tiny bit of nerdy nostalgia, I’m definitely looking forward to a season of good old-fashion geeky fun.
